About Us

South Kent Harriers was formed in 1987, following a spur of the moment meeting returning from the Kent 10.

Four athletes, namely Barry Watson, Martin Beagley, Steve Almond and Mike Hayley had performed very successfully and ascertained that had they all been running for one club, they would have won both the team event and the county title.

A further meeting was arranged for the Prince of Wales Pub in Hythe. At this meeting three additional athletes attended - Clive Bewick, Pete Russell and Roy Bowling. It was decided that a new club should be formed and after much discussion, South Kent Harriers (SKH) was chosen as the name.

It took a further few months writing a constitution, purchasing kit and getting affiliated before the new club could compete. An unofficial rehearsal before the affiliation in the Canterbuy Half Marathon indicated great success and in the October competing officially in the Harlow Marathon, SKH duly won their first title scooping the open team, the Essex Champs and the Southern Counties titles.

During the following 12 years the club swept the board winning most of their events at club, county and regional levels. There was also a top 6 finish in the London Marathon when it was particularly competitive. Individual performances also led to International selection at this time.

It is very much hoped that despite the inevitable ageing of the originals that SKH will enjoy a successsful revival. Fusing together experence and new blood it is our belief that individual and team success will be firmly on the agenda, once again.
